I have a chance to buy an 8' pull behind disc. I have a 2N and an 8N. The guy that's selling it also has an 8N. He says the N has a little trouble pulling it. He's on Long Island though, and I think the soft sandy soil has something to do with it. It really sinks in. He doesn't even need to plow he just discs. I would use it upstate NY where the soil is much harder with clay. I would plow first then disc. I'm wondering what the guys on this board think. Will my Ns pull it or am I spinning my wheels as they say?

I pull an 8 ft IH disc with an 8N, but couldn't pull it at first, wheels would just spin. Found after three cartridges worth of grease into the disc bearings that things went better. Also found that hitching the disc to the regular drawbar was too difficult for the 8N. However, when I hitched it to the drawbar on the three point, I could get more adjustment. ie not only set the cut of the disc, but if it started to bog down, I'd raise the three point a bit and that usually raised the front of the disc slightly, so it would keep pulling. Maybe not the best cure, but the disc only cost $25.00.

Its just too big.If you plow it then disc it the more you disc the harder it will pull.To get your soil like you want it you will be adjusting the cut each trip.Get a 6 footer and be through with it then you can lift it and go..R.M. IN AL.

I don't have any problem pulling mine with my 8N. However, I believe the rear wheels would spin if I did not have the tires loaded. Also, my land is fairly level which is easier than trying to pull it up a slope.

Richard..... ...If'n ya can get it for a "good price" then do itt. If'n yer 8N can't handle it, then sell it for same price. Simple?

My 8n cuts pasture sod in rocky soil with an 8' pull Massy Harris disc. I adjust the disc angles for 0 for tow-behind transport over the pasture. I adjust the cuttin' angles depending upon the soil. Less angle, less tractor power required. Simple?

If'n I had to transport it somewhere, would be on a flatbed trailer, its too big and awkward to lift into my Dodge Diesel pick'em-up..... ...Dell

my grandfather pulled a 8' john deere pull type discc in heavy indiana clay for years. he even weighted the disc down with concrete blocks. but then most always went through the first discings with the discs set straight and then angled them more on the second and third trips.especially on ground that had been in sod and then moldboard plowed.

Thanks for all the input guys. This is a pull behind with no lift. I would leave it at the field so that's not really a problem. I guess the deciding factor now is price. If I get it real cheap I think it's worth a try, otherwise I'll look for a 6 footer.
Thanks again

I have pulled an 8' pull behind with my 8N. It has adjustable cutting angle which helps. Only drawback is transport, but if you only plan on using it around the place it'll work fine. Mine is an old McCormick or IH that dad had to use with a C Farmall. I still have the disk and prefer it to the dearborn lift disk I have.

I've got a 8ft disc, trust me you want a 6 footer. If I didnt have a pretty heavy loader on my 8n I dont know if I'd feel safe with the 8 ft.And man is that pump workin to lift it.So make your discing more of a pleasure with a 6 ft.

A double gang 6' disk makes an 8N work quite hard and leaves the tractor quite light on the front wheels. Just don't believe an 8N can handle an 8' disk. I see the pull behind disk being more of a problem when the disk digs in and the N won't pull it. ray

I have a 6 foot disk that makes my 2N chug pretty hard. Perhaps you could pull an 8 footer, but like you say, it may depend on the soil you are working. Also, the cutting angle you are setting the disks at.

How heavy is the 8 foot disk? My tractor seems to be almost at the limit of the hydraulic lift's capability to lift my 6 footer. Front end is really light when the disk is lifted.

I agree.. my 6' disc is all my 8n wants.

If it is a pull behind, does it jack up on wheels for transport.

If you are going to plow first anyway.. sounds like a smaller disc may be in order.. never know though.. might get away with it.
