Hello, I am looking to buy an 8N or 9N. One of my needs is to drill post holes. I went to see a 9N and the seller says I would have to modify the pto. It only runs when the driveshaft rotates - when the tractor is moving. Is this correct? I am unfamiliar with 'older' tractors, but this seems a bit odd. I really like these types of tractors as they seem to run forever and can do anything. I appreciate any comments or feedback, Thanks!

Thought the 9/2/8n will do it.. as you found out they have neither live pto nor live hyds. One or the other would be nice for PHD's

If you have lots to dig.. like hundreds.. do yourself a favor, and pay a few bucks more for the machine and get a NAA.. has live hyds.. so the lift works when the clutch is in... makes it much easier...

Hello, all posthole auger owners, another question. There has always been a lot of information on these PTO post hole augers. This past saturday I went to an auction with the idea of purchasing one that was listed in the auction items. This auger went for $1,025.00, I thought that was little more than I wanted to pay. This auction was in Nova Scotia, Canada. I attend a lot of auctions and this was the first time that I had seen one at an auction and have never seen one a a dealership. There has always been much discussion on the use of this piece of equipment with the 8n. I would like more information as to the cost if it is available. It appears like a nice piece of equipment to own. The one on saturday had an 8" auger. Thanks Murray

Murray,
If it was a standard ol' hole digger, boy did they find a sucker, you can buy a new one for around 300-350 including one auger. Goes to show why you should have a good idea of the new retail prices of what you're going to bid on. And why you shouldn't get all excited about winning when you're bidding.

Arron..... ...what the other guys say....and....
WARNING: there is NO REVERSE on pto..... I once screwed my PHD into the ground and tractor front wheels were flappin 2' up innna the breeze. I had to use idiot sticks to dig out the auger after I disconnected the auger from gearbox head. The auger thread got caught around a big tree root. Usually, you use a very big pipe wrench to unscrew the auger when it gets stuck..... ...Dell

aaron, what the owner means is that the pto must be in gear, and turning to raise or lower the 3 point hitch, This means that you must have the auger spinning or you can't lift it, or you must unhook the pto each time. It ain't real handy, and somewhat dangerous but we've dug about a bazillion post holes with our N's You are going about this the right way, you are trying to match a machine to your needs. Good luck Ron

No, that's not correct. With the pto engaged and the transmission in neutral, you control the pto with the clutch. The tractor does not have to be moving.

Aaron, The PTO will continue to turn if it is engaged and the clutch is out and the transmision is in neutral. When I used to bushhog with my 8n, I would find myself needing the mower to continue turning while the tractor was stopped, so I would put the transmission in neutral and let the clutch back out. This got to be a habit that I didn't realize I was doing even when I got a new tractor with a live PTO. Old habits are hard to break.
