How do you check problems with starting circuit. Cannot get starter to crank. Is wire to starter switch supposed to be have voltage. How does current travel? How do you isolate problem parts like switch, solenoid, or starter.

Jack..... ....To check your starter system, start at the beginning..... .THE BATTERY..... If'n yer tractor is Original, it should be 6 volts (3-watercaps) and POSITIVE GROUND. Check BOTH battery post clamps for clean, bright, and tight. Battery fumes do funny things to battery clamps.

Your next question is how to check solenoid. If'n it clicks when you push on your starter button by tranny shifter, its probably good. Your 8N starter solenoid should be a 3-terminal roundcan mounted on top of starter with the tiny center terminal mounted next to the tractor engine and hard to get to. The solenoid is electrically HOT and is internally connected to the battery and operates when you GROUND the little terminal with the starter button by the tranny shifter. Lotta shadetree mechanics misstakenly mount the starter solenoid so the little terminal is eazy to get to, and it will NEVER work that way.

Then your last question was how to test your starter motor..... ..LISTEN.....if'n it don't make noise like rurru-rurru, then it ain't gettin' nuff battery power. If'n it goes rang-rang..... fast like, most likely its the most important part that you didn't even ask about..... ..the infamous Bendix starter drive.

And to check the starter drive, ya gonna haffta remove the starter. TIP: put some 5/16 nuts on the LONG starter bolts so the starter don't fall apart in yer hands while you're jigglin' the starter past the flywheel ring gear.

Remember the 6 volt MANTRA: "Keep'em Clean, Bright, and Tight" and don't be fer usin' enny of them thar skinny ferrin battery cables. Use BIG 'arrychested 'mericum made 1-ought (1/0) thick as yer thumb battery cables..... ..... respectfully, Dell

What tractor do you have? Start with the wiring diagrams and trace the circuits. Where do you have power to and when? Let us know all the info you can.
