I pulled the starter out of my 9N 3 days ago. I forgot to put a rag in the hole. It has rained for the last 2 days. What will happen if water gets into the hole where the starter goes?

Yeah.. its probably ruined. Give me your address and I'll come haul it away for you no charge :->

It'l do wat water normall does.. sit there.. and rust if you leave it long enough. Just dry it out, If it makes you feel better, hit it with the wifes hair dryer, or hang your trouble light in there for a while to burn the moisture off.

Ron, How much rain is a rain? We were blessed with a quarter inch Saturday, it totaled more than we received April thru July (didn't have any rain May thru July). I've never seen or heard about a clutch sticking until I read this board. Maybe it's one of those "Pacfic Northwest, Alaska, British Columbia, Washington(State), Idaho, Oregon etc." things. We are supposed to be the rain capitol of the world, but after 50 years I now realize that sagebrush, cactus and scorpions are native desert dwelling creatures I share the central part of Washington with. I do wish you well, and hope you get the tractor running without any drastic "free the clutch" measures. I just threw a little humor in there.

Now on the more serious side, here in the dryland, my father and grandfather swore up and down that the dust and dirt the grease and oil collected, caused more wear on farm equipment than neglect did. We still greased and oiled everything except the plow. Just made sure to wipe off any excess lube. As for plows,,, well a friend of mine, from the wet side of the state, was the first to inform me of the need to "oil the plow shares" to prevent rust. Never heard of it before, we just polished them in the sand the first time we used them in the season. Then used them to plow the rest of the sand we called a farm. Wish I could say "Hope This Helps" I just do not know what type of rain you received.

Ron, be sure the little hole with the carter key under the clutch housing (the one closest to the front) is open. Any water/oil should drain out. I don't think there will be any problems other than maybe a little rust on the flywheel, not sure. Hopefully, not a large amount of water got in.
