I looked at a 2N or 9N today. It has a hi/lo tranmission lever on the left side. Can anyone tell me about it. What model/years was it used? Is it reliable? Is this also called the Sherman Auxillary Transmission? This is the first time I've seen it.

If the lever is on the left side, more than likely it is a Sherman auxiliary trans. In fact, I'm not aware of any other brand of aux trans with the lever on the left, but I'm open to new information.

The Sherman came in 3 flavors: step-up(overdrive), step-down(underdrive), and combination (over and under drive). The first two varieties double the gears on the tractor, the third one triples them. In other words, a 9N with a factory 3 speed trans now has 6 speeds (and 2 reverse speeds) with a step up or step down. With a combination, it has 9 forward and 3 reverse speeds. Which one is yours? The step up and step down transmission levers look the same. The combo trans lever is different. It's easier to show you a picture than to try to explain. Yes, that's a Sherman. I have a Sherman "step up" on my 9N. I haven't heard about any problems with the Sherman auxillary itself. But, there must have been a few, some guys just have a hole in the side of their tranny, where the Sherman was pulled out at one point.

Tom, Mich. Your lucky to have the Sherman step up. I also have one on my 9N and just love it. Like anything mechanical, it can give you problems. I had to replace a gear about 15 years back, but no problem since. Take care of it and don't shift it on the fly! It increased the value of your N about 5-$600. Good luck and safe tractoring. Ron

Mark..... ....most likely the lever shifts the DEALER INSTALLED aux tranny. And most likely it is one of 4-different types of Sherman Aux trannys. If it is a simple bent "L" lever, then it is most likely the OVERDRIVE aux tranny. The less common UNDERDRIVE aux tranny also uses a simple "L" shifting lever. The more desireable 3-speed COMBO aux tranny shifter is commonly described as having a dog-leg shifter lever. The least common Sherman aux was a "REVERSER" tranny for fork-lift operation.

No matter what aux tranny, it works thru ALL the main tranny gears. Meaning an Overdrive aux tranny creates 6 foward speed for the 3-speed 2N. The 3-speed COMBO would create 9 foward speeds for the 2N and 12 speeds foward for the 4-speed 8N. Interestingly, the 8N 3rd gear UNDERdrive is slower than 1st gear OVERdrive.

There were a few other manufacturers of aux trannys but the Sherman was the most common. And as gearboxes go, the Sherman is generally "bullet-proof"..... ...Dell

I just got an 8n that I am going thru. it has a couple extra levers under the seat not counting the hydrolic lift lever. I figured one was the pto and not sure what the other is. Tim

Tim..... ....one of the little levers under your right knee came from the factory and is the draft/position hydraulic control. Use the horizontal/draft position for plowing and vertical position for brushoggin'.

The other little lever is a dealer installed hydraulic control valve to use the tractors built-in hydraulic power externally via the corner hydraulic pressure test port.

It works, but the N's hydraulic pressure is a weak sister of a pump at 2.85 gpm and 1500 psi. If you don't understand those numbers, don't worry, lotta guys don't. For example, the common old frontend loaders for N's external hydraulic pump is good for 5 gpm and 2000 psi. Modern tractor remote hydraulics are good for 10 gpm and 2500 psi..... ....Dell

You guys posted your replies while I was composing mine. I said there were 3 Shermans. I forgot the reversing or "shuttle" tranny. Can you imagine road gear in reverse?
