I looked through the parts listing on this site, and found no reference for the generator cut out relay. Does anyone know who carries them? Thanks

Did you know that a regular 6 volt three post voltage regulator or a two post regulator will work on the three brush generator that carries the cut-out????

All mechanical voltage regulators used with generators have a cut-out as part of the generating system. When the residual magnetism in the generator gets up enough current when started up to close the cut-out the generator begins to make electricity. In the three brush generator there is no regulation needed and if you just connect the generator output to the Gen. terminal the voltage regulator will do the same thing as a cut-out.

I discovered this when working on a 9N of a neighbors about a year or so ago. When I first saw that regulator hooked up to the three brush generator I thought, now this ain't gonna work. I was wrong and it worked perfectly when I got the tractor running.

So Zane, let me see if I understand...a voltage regulator from a 8N can be used on a single wire 6volt generator on a 2N?

I have seen the ford mechanic's diagram for installing a 8N charging system on a 9/2N but I have never heard of installing just the regulator.

Could you pass on instructions and maybe a diagram of how that could be done?

Thanks

Ed..... ..the square can 4-terminal 8N voltage requlator has 3-spools (relays) and the BATT/ARM spool acts same as 9N cut-out relay..... ignore the other 2-terminals.

The 1-terminal 3rd brush genny CANNOT be mechanically regulated by the vibrating field relay 4-terminal squarecan voltage regulator..... ..BECAUSE..... .the 1-terminal genny doesn't have FIELD COIL access except by the 3rd brush.

Your solid state 2-terminal voltage regulator/cut-out is a MUCH BETTER DEAL..... ...Dell

9N, Go with the regulator. If it works as good as the one I've been using on my 9N for the last 7 years, go with it. Battery always charged and not overcharged. Good luck.Ron

I know of several suppliers, most farm and auto parts stores can get them. TSC has em in stock too.

However, for the last two years I have been running an aftermarket voltage regulator (see link below).

It does a much better job keeping the battery up over the cutout relay.

Stick with the original style cut-out. They only cost about twenty bucks and you can get them anywhere. They work fine if you keep it "clean, tight and bright". Heck mine lasted for over 50 years before biting the dust.

I am leaning that way. Not to show my ignorance to much, how does this unit function? Does the relay either pass full genny charge through, or are they somehow adjustable?

When more voltage is on the generator side of the cutout, it connects. When more voltage is on the battery side, it disconnects. I went with the regulator because I bought two cutouts, one right after the other, and both stayed connected even when the engine was off. This drains the battery as it tries to spin the generator like a motor.

Actually the regulator is $63.00 for unscripted and $69.00 for a case with the ford script.

Haven't had a dead battery since I got mine.
