Hey Guys... My NAA has a bit lower compression than it should and blows a bit of smoke out the breather cap after it runs a while. Purely as a stop-gap measure to put off an eventual engine rebuild until I get some spare time, I was thinking of adding an oil additive like "Restore" or any of the other brands that claim to reduce oil consumption and/or improve compression. I don't have any unrealistic expectations, but have any of y'all used these types of products with any success at all ? Thanks ...

Short answer.... Try Restore

Long answer...

The wife had a car she ran out of oil one time. I got it running & took it to the local mechanic. He said he couldn't fix it.
With nothing to loose, I put a can of *Restore* in it. Car ran just fine for another two years. I don't know what it did but it worked that time.
I have never put it in anything else but would again if I had something that the only other option was to tear it down.

Mike-

Just put in heavier oil. Don't use that snake oil stuff. They don't help raise compression. Heavier oil may help a little with plugs fouling.

The smoke out breather is simply blow-by caused by oil vaporizing and being "blown" past the compression rings into the block. Check plugs occasionally for fouling. Might want to run a hotter plug too.

Yep...Already using AL-437's, and they're not fouling. The engine actually runs pretty good, & doesn't even burn much oil. It just chaps my butt a bit to see that smoke coming outta that breather cap, kinda like a splinter that you can't dig out, ya know ?

Anyway, if I'd wanted a tractor that was mechanically perfect, I wouldn't have picked up one that's 50 years old with a lotta hard hours on it.

Thanks for the response !

The reason I like these tractors is that you can make them virtually mechanically perfect for very little money.
Most people can do the work themselves also.
They just need a little encouragement to overcome their uncertainties/anxieties and getting the self confidence of doing the work themselves. I have never had a problem in 50 years with one of these N's that I could not fix myself.

You're right, Jim...I was just thinking about a band-aid approach to this problem (which we all know doesn't exist) until I could take it apart this winter.
