Charging trouble

Hello guys,
I've been a longtime reader of the forum (off and on), and now I need a little help.
I really need to do some brush hogging on my place (my neighbor needs it too), but I've had charging trouble since I bought my machine two years ago.
It's a '51 8N (375378) still on the 6 volt system. I replaced the battery last year; this year I put in a new wiring harness and voltage regulator in fruitless attempts to solve the problem. Tractor starts up great and runs great when I've charged the battery, but when I turn it off and try again (hot or cold) all I get is maybe half a crank out of it. I really don't want to be stuck out in the field, unable to start.
How do I approach this? I don't know the significance of this: with the tractor off and the generator (field and ground) disconnected, there's about 30 ohms resistance between the field and ground. But with the field and generator wires connected, there is zero resistance between field and ground. Does this mean the VR is bad, shorted?
Thanks for any advice; the brush is growing out of control!
Andy

Sounds like problem could be any number of things. You didn't say what guages are indicating. Most common remedy for your symptoms usualy is to poalrize the generator. First make certain that bat + is attached to ground Bat - to VR. With switch OFF Attach a light insulated wire to - of bat, spark quickly other end to BAT terminal of generator. DO NOT SPARK FIELD TERMINAL. Remove wire and fire it up. If it charges, problem solved.
