Have a 3 brush single pole generator / cut out relay. Quick Question - does the generator need voltage to the field coils before it will generate on it's own ? The large coil wire in the cut out relay is broken, am wondering if this is why no charging? Thanks for the help.

If the large wire is broken, that explains why no charge (the generator can't be connected to the battery).

However, you may also now have a bad generator. If the generator is run without a load (not connected to the battery) it will likely develop lots of voltage. This can damage things.

You write..... ..."does the generator need voltage to the field coils before it will generate on it's own"..... ..NO, the field coil is excited from the residual magnitizem and re-inforced by the 3rd brush bleeding voltage off the genny armature output.

The cut-out relay disconnects the 1-wire genny from the battery when the engine stops turning so the battery doesn't discharge overnite back thru the genny gutts.

You write..... ..."The large coil wire in the cut out relay is broken, am wondering if this is why no charging?"..... ..make a wild guess..... ...respectfully, Dell

The NAPA I shop at found the part in their books without too much trouble -- although they didn't have any idea what it was.

Anyone know a napa part number ( or carquest ) for the cutout relay. I've heard that you can get them / equivalent item there.

I'm working on a 'project' for my cub tractor..

I had thought tractor supply had them.. but don't see them there. I could order one, but was hoping to do some work tonight.. and i do have a napa / carquest in driving distance.

thanks

My guess came about because I get around 2-3 volts from the genny post, thats why I thought that I needed a boost of voltage to start the process. The genny does motor on its own,and brushes do not look worn down, but will replace them anyway. Thanks for the follow-up
