I'm about ready to paint my 9n. It is down to bare metal and clean. Do I need a primer on the cast iron? I've gone through the archives and find conflicting opinions. I'm using good old oil base industrial enamel.
Thanks as usual. Pete-NY

Here is some Conflicting Input:
I primed my NAA, but now I wish I had not. I used Grey epoxy primer. Two things went wrong:
1) I didn't over-coat the epoxy primer fast enough, and instead, I let it set up hard. Then it's very difficult to get the color-coat to stick.
2) My tractor is a Red Belly, so every scratch on it reveals the grey primer.

So If I did it again, I'd either use no primer on the red parts, or I'd try to find red primer.

I also strongly recommend that you etch the bare metal before painting. NAPA sells somethiong called Tech Etch (or Tri Etch?). Very easy to use: Just spray it on clean bare metal, let it dry, and the paint really digs in and sticks hard.

Pete,

As Mike OH said, you're going to get conflicting advice. If I take things to bare metal, anymore I just use the color enamel I want, it seems to last as good or better than with primer for me. Good luck.

Pete- You'll get conflicting opinions on this. Many say it is not necessary; some say prime. When I painted my 8N, I pressure washed the entire tractor twice, using a degreasing product. I found out that the casting was red in color and not brown as I thought. I then wire brushed, sanded, and scraped, until most of the paint and rust was gone. I then washed it off with mineral spirits, then soap and water. After it dried, I primed all the sheet metal and topped with several coats of red. Oh yeah, I didn't use a spray gun, I used the expensive approach - spray cans. It worked for me.
