Had to replace my intake/exhaust manifold. Broke off two bolts. Drilled the first one out ok, but the second was a big problem. Rethreaded the holes, put in all new studs, now the second one leaks water when pressure builds up. What is the best way to fix this? Can it be fix without welding the stud? Will a helicoil work? Thanks in advance for all your suggestions.

Ron..... ...NO HELICOIL..... .there ain't enuff meat in side of block to holditt and besides unless you pucky them, they leak.

BUT..... ..do you know that you can re-tap your leaky 7/16" block for 1/2" stud instead? Then drill out your manifold for that particular stud.

OR..... .you could use stud pucky.

Remember, install your manifold studs 54 ft/lbs..... BUT..... .your brass manifold NUTS 27 ft/lbs, understand?..... ....respectfully, Dell

I hate when disagreement happens, but I don't want you to make a costly mistake because of bad advice. DON'T use a helicoil in your block. The correct repair is to go to the next size larger stud. Be sure to use a brass nut. I have worked in a motor rebuild shop for many years and have had to fix too many blocks that were incorrectly repaired with a helicoil.

What do you mean a helicoil wont work? A helicoil will work just fine there. I've done one with a helicoil and it works great! You dont know what you are talking about.

I bet you never used a helicoil there. Sounds like bad advise.

You might try using a good quality pipe dope compound on the threads ( plumbers type ) My second choice a can of stopleak in the old radiator .

Not an uncommon problem. Two fixes: Remove stud, coat threads with good sticky gasket cement (not silicone sealer). More common fix is put some good cooling system sealer in radiator (Lumiseal is real good). Same condition can arrise when replacing head bolts, same fix.
