Just had a real stupid attack, and ended up breaking a chunk out of the rear, any chance this can be fixed? Am I bound to buy a new rear?

Steve, you're right, the chunk is all important, however my first concern is sealing the hole, the bolt hole is a blind hole and will not leak. Welding cast is a real bear, welding oil soaked cast is even worse, weld is really crappy when it comes to oil. E.Ray, here's what I did, I hooked up to a brand new mower that has a shorter link than my old one, and the mower caught on the swinging drawbar, when it broke the bolt hole out it took a chunk of the rear with it. Later

Ron, My condolences go out to you, I can only imagine your anguish, sorrow, anger and other emotions you must have experienced in the aftermath of such a tradagey.

But I must admire your sharing your experience with others, perhaps it will save other elderly Fords from the same fate. I hope the members of this board will be able to step up and provide assistance.

I wish you well.

The bolt hole is blind when the casting is intact, but the break extends through the bolt hole so to hydraulic fluid trying to escape it is no longer blind.

I feel for you - this looks like a tough repair. I would need a professional or a replacement.

You have 2 problems:

Sealing up the hole. Do you still have the chunk? If so it could probably be welded back in. If your not a good welder get acquainted with one.

Making sure that the bolt hole for the chain anchor servicable again. This will depend on how good the first problem is solved. At a minimum it will require cutting new threads. Probably more importantly is the repair strong enough to hold the bolt and weight on the chain.

From your picture it looks like some welding may need to be done from the inside to insure that the fluid doesn't leak out the bolt hole. Sounds like you will need to dismantle the differential to get at it.
