How can you verify the rpm speed of your 8n with front mount distributor? Is there a way to connect an engine analyzer/tester with tach and dwell mesurments?

Thanks, Ron - TX

Ron, Dell's way is good for a continuous reading RPM. I have "rigged" up another way which is better for me because I can read the RPM, dwell, and voltage of my dist system. I have run a wire from inside the dist (connected to the post where the coil pigtail, condenser and points all merge) out thru a hole I drilled in the side of the dist case (sealed with fish tank sealer to keep the water out) and then terminated up under the dash. I then hook up my "old" tach/dweel/voltage meter to this wire and the battery ground when I need to check any of the parameters. I can check an the condition of the point (see if they slipped), check and see if the coil is still functioning (if the motor suddenly stops for no reason!), etc, etc all with out ever having to pull the dist cap or remove it from the tractor. It has been very very helpful in trouble shooting a couple of "no starts" in the past two years. Just be very careful were you terminate the wire under the dash. I have it connected to an isolated electrical post, which is covered with a rubber cover when not in use.

Ron..... .....here's what I'd do. Buy a watch battery operated LCD tachometer that is sticky taped to your dashpanel from some place like J C Whitney for $20. Its a 1-size fits all that gets its trigger signal from any sparkplug wire by wrapping around the sparkie wire. It won't tell you "dwell" but I don't know the dwell specs for frontmount distributor ennyways. Remember idle speed is a slooooow 400 rpms and governor limited MAX rpms is 2200 rpms..... ....Dell

Dell.... I looked at the J C Whitney web site & couldn't find anything like that. Actually nothing that would even work with 6V. Could you find me a link to that ?
