I have a 52 8n with a 6 volt system. I went to replace the coil and the local tracotor store gave me a coil with a 12 volt label on the side. They told me that it would work for both systems. Is this true? If so, for a positive ground system does the + on the coil go to the dist. or the neg battert post.

Tony..... .....ah yes, the 1-size fits all roundcan ignition coil. If you closely read your new coil, there should be a lable that sez: "use with EXTERNAL RESISTOR" or sumptin like that. (but who reads lables, eh?) It really is a 6 volt ignition coil that when used with an external 12 to 6 volt converting resistor, can be used on 12 volt tractors. (but they don't tell you that, they assume you are an experienced mechanic who knows stuff like that)

So yes, your parts guy is correct, you can use it on your 6 volt positive ground tractor when you connect the coil (+) to distributor points connection. The RULE IS coil (+) to battery (+), and since the battery is positive ground, then you connect the coil (+) to points which are (+) ground. And while you could connect the coil (-) to the points, you'll loose upto about 40% of your sparkies with incorrect coil polarity, so (+) to (+)..... .....Dell, who sez: stupid coil lables
