Usually I'm a Red tractor guy, but I would up with both an 8N and a 9N in a recent trade. The 9N hadnt ran for 8-10 years, so put a battery in it, did the usual things that I do when I start a tractor that hasnt ran for a long time. Pulled the tractor 50 feet and had it running. Lots of blue smoke. Here is the thing, I've got enough oil apparently getting by the rings that it gets by the flange clamp between the muffler and the manifold and runs down the exhaust pipe. I'm not opposed to going thru the engine if needed, but am curious if anyone else had had the experience of one getting this bad. I've bought and sold a few used tractors for many years now, but these 2 are my first Ford N's. I'm usually not a believer in dumping "mechanic in a can" in something to cure it's ailments, but you fella's over here on this board seem to have quite a fondness for MMO. With 90 lbs and up of compression, I'm suspecting a couple stuck oil rings somewhere. Is there anything you guys would try before opening it up and overhauling it?

I have had luck freeing rings and sticky valves with Marvel Mystery Oil sometimes, and sometimes not. It is worth a try though. Pete

i got ripped on the garden trator board for this but sounds like some stuck rings,,,pour some straight 2cyle mix in the 1 & 2 piston plug hole & let it soak, turn it over by hand or with the plug wires off w/starter,let us die hards know what happens..

Im thinking you just have to run it easy for a while, that M M oil might help , 90 lbs compression aint to bad , on all 4 . A good oil change and new filter , run it a bit harder, things could improve with use, if you have more than 6 qts of oil in the oilpan its gotta go somewhere.

Though impossible to tell exactly what is wrong.. it can't hurt to go the MMO way, and see if it is just stuck oil control rings.
One thing though.. if it is getting that much oil by.. that may be the source of your 'good' compression.. it is automatically a 'wet' test.

Still .. cant hurt though..

Good luck

plugs on 1&2 are wet to the point of dripping with oil, 3&4 are dry and even have a brownish tint to them. Engine runs very well, no blowby out the breather, although havent had the chance to work the engine very hard, and I'm sure that fouling the plugs out on 1&2 cant be that far away.
