The Volkswagen Cursed my 8N!

My two teenaged sons dragged home a '70 Beetle over the weekend, bought with their own money, and said "Hey Dad! Looky! Now we got something to work on together!" Hoboy. I couldn't complain, as I've told them stories about how I did the same thing to my Dad at that age. Wonder if he's laughing now....

Anyways, drained the last few gallons outta the VW's gastank into a can, so I can start ripping out the floorpans (oh, goodie!). Later, poured the contents of the can into the 8N so I could mow some grass outback. Gotta fine mesh screen in the funnel, but I guess it didn't help, 'cause the 8N died after about an hour, fuel line pluggged up. Got that cleared and then it flooded, gas dripping out the bottom of the air tube, so now I gotta pull apart the carb and get the needle/seat cleared out. Curses.

Moral of the story: I dunno....but I guess VW and Ford parts don't mix, even the gasoline.

Hey, if you need any help (or parts) I love old VW's and I have a barn full of parts that I wouldn't mind parting with. I've overhauled a few of those old air-cooled motors too! I love those old Bugs almost as much as I love my 8N...Almost!----Rob

Rob,

I've got a '62 sunroof I'm restoring - got any early 60s seats/frames? Let me know if you have any other early 60s stuff ('stale air' 40 horse parts, too), and maybe I can help clean out your barn...

For what it's worth, the VW engine is as easy to overhaul as the N's - even easier if you get the cyliners and pistons, etc. as a kit. 1 day job!

Still cuttin' the floor pans back to good metal.....not there yet. Gotta replace all of both pans and the heat channels, both sides. Strange thing is, the rest of the body is in pretty good shape. Even the heat exchangers on the motor are good. Never seen a Bug with this combination of extremely bad floor and real good body. Oh well....

In the old ones the floors used to rot out due to the battery under the back seat which in the days before maintenance free used to splash a little sulphuric acid and fumes around.

Had a '63 and a '62 as my first cars. Easy to work on. I shudder when I think that I used to drive the '62 with bad brakes, no seat belts or air bags, etc. at 65 mph from Boston to Bethlehem PA to/from college, and somehow lived to tell about it. I think for the safety reason I would hesitate to have any of my kids driving one now.
