I am wondering if a 3pt auger will work on a 8n, I ask as it seems that the only down force would be the weight of the auger. Am I missing somthing?
When I rent a skid steer it has a down pressure function that seems to tell me that it would hardly work without it,hmmmm. What say you?

Like Chris Brown said... most tractors don'y have down pressure on the 3pt lift.. and 3pt augers have been around for tractors since the N's... I've even seen an old belt driven auger.. so obviously as time tells, they do work... just have to get creative, as the others mentioned.

I have used a 12" auger behind my N. Like the others have said it is a 2-man job. I use a spud bar between the gear box and the pin to hold the auger pumb and to exert down pressure and help get it back up. It works best if you go a little bit down then raise it up then a little more down and so on untill you get to the depth you want. Do not push in the clutch with it buried 3 1'2 feet deep or it may get stuck and trust me you don't want that. Good luck

I forget to ask, what is the largest diameter and depth of auger that can be practicaly used on my 49 8n ? Im looking to set 6x6 posts for a pole barn. Would like to drill 16 or 18 inch diameter by 36 inch depth.

i have a 3 pt.auger for my 9n and it works fine all you have to do is have someone put alittle of their weight on the auger and it digs pretty good.
a whole lot better than digging by hand

Some augers have a pipe on them that sticks out the back to use as a lever to put down pressure on them, so it takes two people to get the job done, and you shouldn't run the thing anyway without someone watching you. The pto has to be engaged to raise and lower the 3pt hitch so the auger will be spinning and it has a tendancy to swing from side to side. It is a two man job and you need a third person to keep reminding the other two that this is dangerous and to stay away from the auger. I have used an auger on an N many times with no problem, but, you need to keep safety as your main priority. Get the job done but be safe. Buckeye

The "N" will run it fine. 90 percent of tractors don't have down pressure. With the "N" you'll just have to go slow and watch out not to stick the auger, the pto has to turn to lift. You can screw your self into a hole you cant get out of.
