I just recently purchased an older 8N. The previous owner has several old Ford tractors restored. Nothing has been done to this tractor in years. He suggested all oils, hydo fluids and radiator be flushed. What type of engine oil to us? Hydro fluids? How much anti-freize to water?

PS: Want to push a little snow this winter, bushhog in late fall. Thanks for any suggestions.

Did you buy a running ,operating tractor or did you buy a p. o. s . ? Inquirings minds would like to know, 30 wgh, engine oil ( 6 qts with filter ) 5 gallons of 90 wght in the trany. 50 / 50 mix for the rad. fluid , man , get a manual, your going to need it, when you drain the trany take out all 3 plugs starting with the plug in the rear end .

Hey thanks for the response. I looked for a tractor for several months. Went to a couple of tractor shows and talked to different people who owns 8N. This tractor runs very good, No smoke, no leaks yet, the only thing bad is the hydro has major drift. It won't hold the bushhog up unless it has the pto engaged. This would look like a replacement pump at some time. Implement will drift right down within a few seconds. Any advice about this? Thanks Rex

If your lift sags after a few seconds it very well could be the pressure relief valve (part #8N 638). You can get a replacement new or used and this should help the lift stay up unless it really is your pump piston. A search through the archives will tell you exactly how to perform this inspection as well as the proper time saving way to replace your press. relief valve.

First make sure the fluid you use in the pump/trany/rear end, is either pure mineral oil or 134D which is thinner. Look in the "Archives" for the "Llmas" article. A quick fix is go to Tractor Supply Company "TSC" and get the fluid marked for older FORD Tractors/1939 to 1952. Your drift down is most probably the cylinders at the top of the lift leaking, not the pump. Pull the side plate with the dip stick in it, fluid should be at this level when full, and put your lift under a load. If you see oil flowing from the top it is the two cylinders, (a little drip is normal). If rebuilding them use the NAA "O" ring type rebuilding kit. If you see swirling in the oil it is probably the pressure releif valve, rarer but possible. If someone has put a thin fluid in the tractor this "WILL" cause the leakage, so do change the fluid first. All systems will drift down after a time, none will hold up until the next time you use the tractor. Dave OH
