Hey there. Well, it’s happened twice in a row now and I’m rather confused. Maybe someone has some experience with this!!! I’m not really superstitious, but this is has me wondering…. I think I have a people jealous “N”. The first time my 2N had met my neighbor the PTO shaft broke (well, the C clip in the PTO housing broke, thus out came the shaft…) Saw the neighbor out at his side of the fence, and figured I’d drive up and say hello. So we say hello, chit chat for a bit and he barks out: “How do you like that old tractor?!?!?!” Oh, it’s great!!! Does all my chores, pleasure to drive… “Runs like a top!!!” (famous last words) Half-hour later, there went the PTO shaft….. That was about two months ago, and fixed it right away…. Last night (about six’ish) I’m out tractoring around, hauling a cart of debris out to the burn pile, when I look out and see an SUV up out on the side of the road. Once I noticed that it was actually parked on my property, I went out to the road to have a look. Mother and daughter, and a blown tire. I ask if I could give them a hand, and was told that the husband was on his way. Regardless, I suggested that they park on my driveway and get off the busy road. So they did, and offered to change the tire. Turns out they were missing their jack, so I jumped back on Wilber (as some of you may recall, my wife names the tractors) and headed up to the house to fetch a jack. Five minutes later, me, Wilber, and the 3-ton floor jack return to the SUV and meet the husband. “Hey honey” he says,,, “would ya look at that old tractor!!!!” I saw it before she simply replied…I guess they were in a hurry, because the two of them left in the husbands car soon after. Well, I got the tire changed for the husband, and afterwards, he really wanted to have a look at the “N”. Sure (said so proudly). He really enjoyed the engineering involved and was amazed at how well it held up to nearly 60 years of service. How do you like it??? “Oh I love it, runs amazingly well, real useful for the chores around the property, “Couldn’t be happier!!!” Well, he was thrilled to have his tire changed, thanked me, (I wouldn’t take anything from him) and he headed up the road. I headed back to the burn pile, shut the tractor off, and a half-hour later the battery was dead, and the alternator stopped putting out….. Oh well….. At least I got the opportunity to change a stranger’s tire, (first time I think) and make their day!!!

WEll, my 2N breaks something twice a day, doesn't matter if strangers are present or not. It's 56 years old, it has a right to be tempermental, I hope people think of me the same way, It's a year older than I am. I get up and sometimes I don't feel to hot, so I have to think the 2N is in the same condition, although, a complete ovehaul is a lot cheaper than bypass surgery. Buckeye

At least it waited until later to break, so you didn't suffer the embarrassment of having it break in front of company.

N's don't like expressions of pride. They are small unassuming machines that just want to go about their duty quietly. When you show pride and try to brag on them or show them off,(and you know thats what you were doing) they will get even. When Me and the '49 are around people I've found it best to treat mine with the same respect as I do my 14 yr old when she has PMS. As quietly and gently as possible.

Not me, when mine acts up, I go cut a hickory switch and give it a severe beating right in the area of the pto shaft! I know it sounds like abuse, but I'm a firm believer in spare the rod, spoil the N. Now don't go calling the N and youth services, cause I've got mine scared to the point of denying it ever happened. UHHH, now wait a minute, since the N is older than me, that must be elder abuse,,, I gotta go think on this, Mom and Dad always taught me to respect my elders, now I might have stepped over the line,,, Geeze, how do I erase this incriminating evidence?? Uhhh , Later

HAHAHAHAHA, that's great...

I like to talk to "Johnny" as my '47 2N is called and I usually like to walk around him before I start him up and look everything over or at least give it a good pat on the hood. Once, my grandfather was plowing with a big 500# two disc disc plow when they hit something, the front tires came off the ground a little and the plow turned the nose of the tractor right over the ditch. When the wheels came down, it just sorta rolled over into the ditch and my grandfather just stepped off the tractor as the ditch came up to meet him. However, the tractor kept going...sideways...with the oil fill tube on the low side gushing oil. He had to crawl back down there and turn the engine off. Said there was about 1 qt. left in the engine when he did that. Still, Johnny has never complained. I swear that old tractor is a part of me....

did i mention i'm only 23? Ah, who cares...I can still hug my tractor if'n I want to!

(my tractor gets presents for being good instead of punishment for being bad...you know, positive reinforcement and all)
