Hey, guys...I saw the posting a bit further down the page regarding an 8N with weak left side brakes. My NAA is having the same problem, and I'm wondering if any of you who own NAA's find that the left side brake doesn't like to slow ya down too much. I just replaced the shoes, left hub and axle, left & right side axle seals...pretty much rebuilt the whole rear end. I just wanna know if I should accept it as normal, give it a chance to break in a bit, or is there something specific that I can do to help the left side slow me down as well as the right side ? By the way, the left brake DOES work, I just hafta really stand on it, as compared to the right side that works pretty much like a mechanical brake should. NAA brakes and 8N brakes are pretty much the same, right ?

When I replaced the axles and hubs on my NAA, I also replaced the shoes. Can lock either wheel with min. pressure..... E. Ray

It is normal that the left brake will not self energize as well as the right. It's a physics and geometry thing. Should be able to stop the wheel at slow speed either right or left side. Remember they are turning brakes, designed to help turn sharply in tight turns on loose soil. Not intended for use at high speed such as an automobile.

Mike-

While I have no experience with NAAs, the same basics apply. If your new shoes were not contoured to fit the hubs, that would definately cause your problem. Hubs wear into bigger inside diameters over time (or hubs get machined to remove groves), but brake shoe arcs don't. Therefore if shoes aren't contoured by a machinist then only the middle part of the shoe is contacting the hub.

I did a very quick search for new brake drums for my 8N and came up empty. Are they available anywhere?
