I have an alternator from a 91 skylark with the following terminal markings:

PL FS - - - --

As well as the BAT terminal. Any assistance in relating these to the P1-P2 terminals would be appreciated.

As always, much appreciation for the responses. I'm glad to use this alt. as it is just sitting around gathering spider webs. Again, Thanks.

You have a CS-130 alternator, GM's replacement for the 10SI, incorporating several improvements.

The "L" terminal acts to turn on the regulator and as a fault indicator. Connect this to your "side marker lamp" or to a resistor. Connect the other side of this device to the output of the ignition switch. You can think of this post as analagous to "P1". Unlike the 10SI, you have a broad choice of resistance values; anything from 10 ohms to 300 ohms will work.

Connect the big output post to battery positive and you are done. None of the other terminals are needed. One advantage of this "two wire" alternator is that there is no diode trio and no possibility of backflow into the ignition causing the tractor to continue to run after turning the switch off.

If you are curious about the other terminals,
"S" is remote voltage sense, analagous to "P2" on the 10SI, but connection of same is optional in the CS130.

"P" is connected to the stator and can be used to drive an electronic tachometer through suitable circuitry.

"F" is connected to the field positive, and can be used to diagnose the state of the internal regulator.

did a goole search to find that link but now will not come up. did a search for alternators. did save to floopy. Will send , neen email. Interesting artical. L- entergizes alternator- needs some resistance (35ohms) or more or a dash warning light.

S- to heavy gauge wire to battery F- not used

P- not used

To convert wire P1 to L terminal (must have some resistance or will damage alternator)

S to P2 wire

You can get adapter for this conversion
non resistor adaptor
AC delco: 8077 haywire: 2110
Painless wiring: 30707

resistor adapter
AC delco: 8078

well having gone through this myself recently, I'm fairly certain the S/L is the sense/light trio, and the F/S is field excitation. So to make this shorter, yes P1 and P2.

Thanks for the response. A clarification, if I may. Looking at the connector, I have a large red wire on the S terminal, and small wires on both the F & L terminals, with no wires from the P terminal. How does that coincide with the P1 & P2 terminals?

Just thought of something, I wonder if its possible that the L is for the idiot light? You may have to tie these two together, but you should be able to finger that out. I know you can buy a used Delco for about 15 bux, but I couldnt bring myself to spend the money when I had 2 good alts sitting here. I may get kinda brain dead once in a while, but I sure am having fun.

wellll, I guess I didnt read your post as close as I should have. I thought there was 2 spade terminals, 1 labled SL, 1 labled FS. Normally the SL would be a sensing/idiot light combo. It senses the current at the battery and tells the alt whether it needs to produce more or less. Now, what your saying is you have 4 spade terminals, correct? Plus the battery terminal?
Just guessing, but I would have to say F is for fields, S is for the sensing and the other 2 were for something else on the car you probably dont need. Do you have a 12V battery charger? How about an air impact wrench? If so, use an analog voltmeter on the battery terminal, put 12V to the F spade and giver a good spin, you should get about 14 V. That will tell you if the F is field excitation. Then install the alt and hook up S to your side marker lamp. all should work, if it doesnt, it's just a matter of trial and error to find the right spade.
Sorry about the first post, hope this gets you going.
Bill
