I'm in the beginning stages of my 8N engine overhaul. I dropped the oil pan and observed that the crankshaft has quite a bit of scoring/sratches where the shaft rides on the oil seal next to the crankshaft pulley. Is there any way to repair the shaft? I was thinking that having the shaft machined at that point would not work since the oil seals only come in one size. Is the shaft salvagable? Thanks in advance.

Rick..... ....Do a little N-Board "archive" search on "front seal". The Ford flathead V-8 guys have come up with a front crankshaft seal ($10 cheap) that really works. It replaces the front rope seal. Nothing for rear rope seal at this time. Red's Flatheads seems to come to mind.

And there are also "crankshaft sleeves" that can be installed if front crankshaft is that bad. Your machine shop would know. Ain't had my kauphy yet..... ....Dell

Rick, The N uses a rope type seal which is very durable if installed correctly. The front seal rides on the crank pully; the back seal rides on the crank shaft. My 8N front seal had worn a grove in the pully, which I repaired. I don't think it would hurt to have the crank truned. In fact, if you want a thouough rebuild I would have the crank turned. When I did my 8N rebuild I had the crank polished instead of turned and my oil pressure is a little lower than I would have liked after a rebuild. I trusted the machinest that polished the crank and I did not use plastigage to check the bearing clearance. Maybe someone else (as well as myself) can learn from my mistakes. HTH. Rick H. GA.

The crankshaft can be ground up to .040, it won't effect to rope oil seals.

The crankshaft does not run on the seal at the front of the engine. The seal runs on the front belt pulley. The pulley can be replaced. If it wasn't leaking it probably won't leak this time either. It is normal for the seal surface of the pulley to be cut down some.
