Have a 42 9N with single wire genny. Have changed the following items: Cut-out, genny brushes, ran new correct guage wiring, new ammeter. I can only get about -2 amps on guage @3/4 throttle. Have adjusted genny to kick out at least 10 volts @ same rpm. Is there anything left to try before I swap it to 12 volts (already have alt & batt. lying around, so this is a financial move). I wish to keep it original, but have run out of ideas. Thanks for the aid.

Have you considered the possibility that you installed your new ammeter "backwards"? Eazy check, just turn your ignition switch on and watch meter. With points closed, should show discharge of about -2 amps. Don't know if points are closed? Ground the frontmount ignition coil terminal for a quickie test and watch your ammeter for discharge. OR roll tractor rear wheel and turn engine by gearbox until ammeter reads sumptin.

Remember, ammeter don't care, positive or negative ground, don't care if 6 or 12 volts. YOU CARE only that the ammeter shows a traditional positive reading when charging the battery from the genny.

10 volts outta the 1-wire 3rd brush 6 volt genny should show about 5 amps (or more) charge. 7.5 volts should show about 2 amps charge..... .....Dell

Thanks, Dell. actually I omitted the fact that lights on, engine not running, ammeter shows 8 amp discharge, and voltage reading @ battery with engine running is a solid 6V.

O.K..... ....-8 amps discharge for headlamps, typical. -2 amps for ignition, typical. Can't find fault with new ammeter installation.

10 volts outta 1-wire genny, high but typical for unloaded genny. 6 volts at battery when running..... ..NOT TYPICAL.....

This has all the indications of eather a bad cut-out relay (still) or you miss-wired when you changed your wiring. You could have miss-installed your new cut-out relay. I can't remember if the roundcan cut-out relay has stamped terminal lables like BAT and ARM. Check closely.

With engine OFF, your BAT cut-off terminial should read same as your real BAT. (6 volts) and "0" volts on GEN terminal.

You did remember to "polarize" your new cut-out relay, didn't you?..... ....Dell
