When I bought my 49 model 8n it had been converted to 12 volts, but it had the wrong alt. Today I finally got the right alt. from AZONE. Since I have f/m distributor, my alt. bracket is mounted on the right hand side of engine above govenor. Everything is working like it should, but the only problem I have the pigtail wiring is only 3/4 inch from the exhaust man. Has anyone had this happen, if so how did you correct? TIA

Alternators are assembled as a "front half" and a "back half". The two pieces are held together with three through bolts. If you don't like the position of the output terminals, you can remove the through bolts, move the back half away from the pulley slightly, rotate the back half to the alignment of your choice, and reassemble. This process is called "clocking" the alternator and you have a choice of three possible poitions.

If you pull the case halves apart too far, the brushes will move past the slip rings and you will have to use the old "paper clip in the brush holder" routine to get it back together.

Usually the alternator can be had under several similar part numbers reflecting the different "clocking" numbers. It's the same thing assembled three different ways.

Once you've had an alternator apart, you won't fear this relatively minor bit of tweaking to get it the way you want it.

(4) Four bolts and positions, in most cases.
