2N Starting Problem

I have a 1943 2N that runs great, after I get it started that is. If it sits for a day or sometimes even a few hours it WILL NOT start using the starter. Yet, if I tow it for a yard or two it fires up instantly. Could the starter somehow reduce the voltage available to fire the plugs hot enough for it to start? Could my coil just be weak? The spark seems strong enough (no tester, just eyeball)when the starter is cranking it and the starter was recently rebuilt and works fine (no dragging, etc). All electrics are original. Thanks, Roy

Roy, I'd give some serious consideration to your compression readings. You should do a dry/wet compression test. Or you can try to jump it with a 12 volt battery to get it to spin faster and see if that will start it. It sounds like you are not pulling enough draft from the carb to start the engine. If this is the case I WOULD NOT convert to 12 volt as that would only be a band aid, it may be time to do a rebuild. Try the 12 volt jump, and get those compression readings and post them here and I'm someone will be able to advise you on your next step.

Roy. When you jump with a 12 volt battery, only jump the starter and still use your 6 volt for the ignition. Starter works equally as well with either 6 or 12 volts. You will have to be standing along side the tractor to do this, so make sure it is out of gear, double check this before jumping. Don't want to read your obit. "Man run over by his tractor" Good luck. Ron
