I have an early 8N, and I was doing some work to it yesterday, and noticed something strange. The front crank pulley would "chuck" side to side, a little bit. Now the motor runs fine, with no odd noise,so I don't think the crank is busted, but what do you think it could be? Is there a keyway in there that could be worn, or a bolt louse? If just loose, how do you get in there to tighten it?BTW, I have a front mount hydro pump on it, so could be a different style pully. Thanks for any help.

Paul

I have the same problem with my 8n.After doing some investigating I think I know what is causing this. Look at your fan belt line of travel from the left side of the tractor(oil filter side) there seems to be a mis alignment from the generator to water pump then to the crank pulley. Thus the belt is causing a lot of strain on the crank pulley being the furthest away.I slotted the mounting holes on the generator small L brkt and added a thick washer to the front cast brkt moving the generator forward. This seems to help a little.Let me know if you see a mis alignment in your belt..

Paul..... ..you'll have to disconnect your frontmounted hydraulic pump stinger shaft to inspect your engine pulley. This won't be eazy with all the FEL stuff in the way. But you gotta do it before major failure.

And yes, there is a half-moon key that connects the pulley to the crankshaft.

The front pulley bolt is torqued to 150 ft/lbs. TIP: stuff some soft 1/4" rope down any sparkie hole and the piston will stop the crank from turning when you tighten the bolt..... ....Dell

Any tips to getting the stinger shaft off? I don't have a loader, just a snow plow, so there is some room near the pump.

Well, heres anouther for you.. It has power lift, and angle thanks to the add on hydro system. Seems to work good, but I want to adapt some kind of loader to it.

Unbolt the pump and slide the shaft out the front axle pivot.

The key is at the pump end and splines are at the engine end unless it is homemade.

Scott..... .what you say is TRUE for the pump stinger shaft.

The engine crankshaft pulley has a half-moon key slot that must mate back inside the engine with the crankshaft's half-moon key..... ....Dell

You must remove the splined hub from the pulley to get to the bolt to tighten it, if you need a pulley be sure and get the one for the front pump drive and not the standard one.
