The choke spring in my rebuild kit is appears to be "backwards." It certainly does not match the old spring. When I put it on, the tension keeps the choke flap closed. There appears to be no way to use it so that the tension keeps the flap open. Is this correct - should the tension keep the flap closed? Thanks in advance.

Tension keeps it open. Maybe this picture will help.

...the round end of the spring goes over the little post next to the choke shaft. But just before you push it down all the way onto the post you will need to rotate the square end of the spring clockwise before you engage the arm on the shaft. You might need a small pair of pliers and an assistant if you don't have enough dexterity. Hope this helps.

Rick,
If you forgot how you took it apart (like I did), the picture in the FO-4 is of no value. The choke arm slides through the flap, The flap is on the top, and to the inside. The spring has two hooks. One catches over the arm, the other over the tab on the carburetor. Check your installation. HTH.

Brian, thanks for the help. I'm ok with the flap now, but my new choke return spring is different from the old one. Are the replacements supposed to be different? Thanks.

I'm not aware that the springs are different today. My 2N didn't have one, and the one on my 8N was broken. That's a good picture in the above post. The spring holds it open. When you're holding the rod back, the plate is closed, but suction will open the flap.
