Should I or Can I treat my 9N engin oil with Sea Foam or Gumout or something like that? Will this be a benefit or could we do some damage.

Why do you want to treat your oil?

Smoking?
To clean things out?
Better lube?

As a general clean out.

Do you use detergent motor oil now? If you do then you probably don't need to do much else. If you are using old style non-detergent, then a switch to detergent motor oil would be my first step. Odly enough your tractor may seemingly run worse after a clean out or a switch. The built up gunk goes a long way to keeping things sealed. After you may notice more smoking, knocking and such. You also may need several oil changes before things clean up.

You may have seen an add for oil that brings new life to old engines. They are putting in the goop. Making those worn rings seem tighter, etc.

Just for comparison I use a multi-grade 10W-30 detergent motor oil. It is light enough for hard winter starting and not too light for summer mowing. I have seen no problems.

Good Luck!

You know, most of us guys that have been around a while know that the modern oil technology engine oils are the better way to go. But, if I had an engine that had been run with non-detergent oil (and runs fairly good) and wanted to switch to detergent oil, how would I do it? If you switch all at once and break all the sediment loose and get it circulating around in there, you can do more harm than good. I believe that I would start at the next oil change and add one or two quarts of detergent oil to the rest non-detergent and watch it kinda close to see how quick it turned dark. If that seemed okay, the next oil change would be three quarts of detergent, the rest non-detergent and etc., till it self cleaned and was completely changed over. The only other way that I can think of to do any better is to take off the oil pan (and valve cover if it has one) and clean those areas out too. If I did that though, I would switch to all detergent oil immediately. L8R----Fred OH

Thanks for the info Snowplow. I will stick to the non detergent oil until I have some problems. She runs just fine now.

I'm not familar with "Sea Foam".
I use 10-40w havoline and Slick-50 in my 8N. After i bought it almost a year ago, i put one quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in with the oil, ran it for about 8 hours of use, then drained that and refilled with fresh oil and Slick-50.
My tractor still has the original 6V system, and i have noticed that the engine is turning over a little faster when cranking than when i bought it.

hope this helps
