I just got an FO4 manual. I decided to make whatever adjustments/inspections to the hydrualics that I could. They don't work as well as they should. Pulled the inspection cover and saw a steady but small stream of oil coming from the ram cylinder. I tightened the yok on the control spring to remove the endplay. Turned in one full turn. Adjusted the quadrant forward to get better position control. The leak has stopped. Checked in draft and position control. Moved quadrant up and down. No more leak (grin). Could adjusting the yok control spring make a difference? Pleasently puzzeled.
Any thoughts.

Tightening the yoke on the draft spring had absolutely nothing to do with the ram cylinder lealing. It may be that the piston was sitting on a badly scored portion of the cylinder bore when it leaked and not when it didn't leak. Like when you moved the quadrant to raise it higher. Higher may not have been being touched before and that portion of the ram may not have been as scored.

I suspect that the ram cylinder needs to be honed and the rings replaced. I would get an NAA piston and the rubber ring if you do go into it to repair.

If you do go into the lift you need a jib to do a proper adjustment of the lift linkage.

Hi Pat,Yes it can make a huge difference. You can do a search for "yoke" in the archive's and get a more detailed explanation on this subject.HTH,Jay 2NSC
