8N quits after 3 rounds

I have just purchased a 1950 8n from an older gentleman who was it's owner for some 25 years. The first time I used it, it started and ran fine, but yesterday I couldn't get it to start. After pulling it off with my truck, it ran good for 3 rounds of mowing, then died. Today, I replaced the ignition coil, hoping to solve the problem, but it once again ran for three rounds then quit. Any suggestions on a fix? Thanks, Steve

Too many Steves in this post...

What others suggest, but you didn't mention checking the points, condensor, etc. Further, an improper 12 volt conversion could cause your coil - new or old- to become to hot. When it colls down it'll start up and run until it gets hot again.

From your outline, it sounds, at least to me, that there might be a fuel problem.

You might consider checking all of the three (3) fuel filters, 1) filter at fuel shut-off valve, 2). at the carb, inlet, and 3) the screen located inside the glass bowl assembly.

There is also a fuel tank "vent" which, if clogged, will stop the flow of fuel. To check the vent, sometime try running the tractor with the fuel cap loose. If the vent is clogged, it will be necessary to remove the tank.

Hope this helps. Others will probably have more ideas. :})

If the fuel tank vent is clogged you don't need to remove the tank - just get a vented cap. You won't be able to unclog it anyway if it is clogged under the "bubble" on top of the tank.
