I'll be replacing the pistons and valves in my 8N. Should I use the pistons with three rings or four? Also, is it adviseable to switch to the rotating valves? Thanks for the help.

Rick-

What messrs Rotten Robert and Dell say AND I highly recommend you check your crankshaft for wear and proper sizing. You have to do it to order the correct size bearings for your rods.

AND realize that others before you may have done just quick piston/piston ring replacements and IGNORED looking at the main bearings. You can't know unless you look...

Further, you don't mention your sleeves. You must mic them at top 3/4" or so of sleeve and at mid-point of piston travel. You must check for ridges. If you don't, your pistons may not have tha .002" inch/5 pound drag interference that is recommended for this engine. Can translate into piston slap, broken rings, etc.

I have used both the 3 and 4 ring sets and can't tell any difference. A friend says the 4 ring cut down on oil consumption. I always look at the dollars both for myself and my customer. I just finished a 9N last spring and used the rotating adjustable tappets (lifters) and the straight stem valves w/solid guides. Sure makes valve adjustments a snap. Be sure to buy the little wrench set too.

Rick..... ...what RR sez..... but.....
Modern 3-Ring pistons have better oil control than the old 4-ring pistons. 3-Ring pistons also have less friction for more engine efficency. Notice ALL MODERN engines use just 3-rings, must be a reason.

If'n I was replacing pistons, I'd definately go with the 3-ring. And adjustable tappets are the cat's meow..... ...Dell
