This is the new thermostat I got for my 8N. I know it goes in the upper radiator hose with the large spring end towards the engine, correct? Does it set directly in front of the head inlet or slightly above it or more towards the radiator? Do I need to add an external clamp to hold it in place besides the two hose clamps already on it? Thanks in advance.

Inside the LARGE SPRING END, as you call it, (Which is toward the TOP of your picture), is the copper chamber filled with a special wax, which operates the thermostat in response to heat. That end MUST face the cylinder head, as that is where the hot water is that you are sensing.

I would put it in the area of the hose nearer to the head to better respond to the rise in water temperature in the head.

(Also, the fitting on the head is the OUTLET.)

The water pump draws cooled water from the lower fitting on the radiator, forces it into the block, and then out through the head, through the thermostat, and into the top radiator fittiing.

Not sure what you have there but it is at least for a tractor of the NAA vintage or newer. Take it back and have them give you the correct #9N-8575 stat and it will work. I believe the TISCO counter part is part #B2NN8575A.

Hello Mr. Gaspump:
You were correct in that it is for a NAA! The company that made them mislabelled them. I am getting the correct one today. Thanks for your advice.

That is the part number on the other side of the box B2NN8575A. I sort of figured it was sposed to go in with the large spring end towars the engine.

Normal 8N thermostats look nothing like that, sure looks like the wrong one to me. Perhaps it is that companys version of an 8N replacement, if so and it will fit the hose You are correct that it would install with the pointed spring end toward the engine.

The correct temp for the thermostat will be 160 degrees.

No clamps needed - spring toward engine - anywhere in the hose will work
