Losing power

I have a nice 8N, that earlier this year had the rings replcaced, new wiring etc. Ran great when I got it, but now seems to be down on power. It will start with ease and purr like a kitten, even after sitting for a week or two, but when I get it under a load with the brushhog, it has started to bog down. Grass I was mowing through in 3rd gear now requires a 1st gear pass, and sometimes 2 or 3 tries. Another thing I have noticed is when I give it more throttle (just running down the road, not mowing), the tractor will seem to "sputter" a second or two before responding.

I have checked the fuel filters (tank, carb, elbow) and all is clean.

Where to start? Governer trouble? Points?
Any suggestions would be appriciated!

Everyone,

Thanks for the suggestions. I have a long weekend (4 days) and will be checking all of the above. I have an old 2N (which will hopefully be torn down and rebuilt - by me - this winter) and have changed points several times. In fact, I may even still have an opened set. I do have the FO-4 manual, but not with me. Does it speicify the setting for the carb main jet? I did try removing the "oil cup" on the air breather and went up and back on the road a couple of times, but still get a good "sputter" for a second or so when accelerating. I will follow up early next week and let you know what I found.

Odie,
Besides the other sugesstions, have you adjusted the main jet on the carb properly? How about the air cleaner? Is it clean?
Does you governor linkage move smothly when you pull the power lever down? Hope this helps.

While these tractors rarely seem to get out of time, the points often close up. I gap my side-mount N at .026; the book calls for .025. I usually check the points every month in the summer, and have to re-gap at least once. So.....I'd check the points.

It sounds to me as one of 2 things. Check the gap on the points as they may have worn and closed up. Put a little grease on the cam to stop this after you adjust them . Also check the HIGH speed setting of the carburetor.Make sure the gas in the tank gets through the bowl in enough quantity as you might be running lean . Open the valve all the way to check this as they clog up inside of the tank and won't work right even though the filter is clean. Len

Odie-

Ya GOTS to keep up with your tune-up on these tractors. I bet your points are outta gap or burned. Most "dies under load" as you describe are tune-up related. Check your plugs too (gap/condition).

check your blades on the bushhog, they could be dull, causing the tractor to be under more load
