I'm trying too get to the head gasket . I got all the nuts off, but I'm trying to see a way to get the head off. I have tapped on the side to try to loosen, tried to pull off using the water inlet. can anyone give me some insight.thanks Redd

well i got it off with a little persuasian. I see where the head gasket was blown. However I saw a good amount os carbon on the #2 piston. Is this normal the others look pretty clean #1 has justa little. 2-3 has a little moisture on top

Was the head gasket blown where water was getting into the combustion chamber? That will clean any carbon off, so it could be that the one with carbon was the only one that wasn't leaking.

How do your valves and plugs look? You can check the plug to see if it is carbon or oil fouled at all and that will help you in the right direction although I would guess valves as it would be unusual for one oil ring to go bad and the other 3 look good.

I took all of my head nuts (and a couple of studs) out and mine was stuck on there pretty good. I tapped all the way around it lightly with a hammer, but nothing. I then got a block of wood and put it between the hammer and the head and hit a little harder. Still saw no movement. I sprayed PB blaster around all the edges and stud holes and let it sit. The next day, I came back and pried up on the water neck with a piece of wood using the water pump as a fulcrum. It broke free. The problem was the head was binding a little on the old, rusted up studs. you have to lift it off straight up (or down) or it will bind. I kinda like the idea of turning it upside down, but that doesn't work if it's still on the tractor (hehehe)

Put the four corner bolts/nuts back and leave them 1/8 inch from the head...Turn it over with the starter about 3 'whirrs'...

It will lift...
