Hello,

I located a late '49 8N that is is wonderful shape. It is a solid tractor with good compression, clean 6-volt with new wiring, tight steering, no smoke, very good tires, excellent paint...I know, don't be fooled by a paint job.

It is not known when or if the engine has been rebuilt. The current owner is a retired mechanic and told me that based on the quality of the tractor's condition when he got it 6 or so years ago he decided not to do an engine job but rather clean, repair or replace things like the wiring harness, muffler, plugs, hoses, etc... He has a photo record of the work where he stripped it down, both the paint and things like the starter and distributer and it shows how he repaired, replaced and painted the whole tractor item by item.

Being that it is a strong runing tractor in show/parade condition and that the seller has an excellent reputation from several people I know that have done business with him what is a fair price on this above average N.

It is not comming with any attachments. I have seen 8N's that aren't as nice but run well and have a couple of attachments go for $3,000 to $4,250

I don't plan on using it as a work tractor since it is so nice.

Just curious what your thoughts on price are.

Thanks.

Hi Sal,

I don’t mean to brag, but I have a 49 8N in similar condition as you have described. I have owned and used the 8N for over 25 years. I spent about $1500 on an engine rebuild and restoration a couple of years ago (paid $200 just for the automotive grade acrylic enamel paint).

I have absolutely no plans to sell my 8N but if I did, I believe I would have to have between $3500 and $4000. I know that price is on the high side, but I have seen 8N’s not nearly as nice as mine, or the one you described, advertised for $2500 to $3500. HTH Rick H. Ga.

A friend of mine locally sold his 50 yesterday with a 5 foot bush hog for $3200. The hog was worth about $250. It was a very good tractor with no rust or sheet metal damage and a very good paint job. I don't think though that I would have bit on it because there are just too many around and a lot of the fun is in the fixing up part.

In my part of VA, a tractor in that condition could bring $3200-$3500. Why doesn't he just tell you what he wants for it?

...I agree. He should set the price. Like an ol' boy I knew used to say, "I can't buy it and sell it too!".

Sal..... ...Write an "offering price" on your business card and walk away. Offering price is NOT necessarily the price you're willing to pay, just as his "asking price" is not necessarily the price he's willing to sell at. Used tractor sales prices are extremely negotiable. Howsomever, don't make your offerin' price insulting or you won't get the call..... ...Dell
