Hey everybody, I know this is OT and know there is a board here at ytmag for stationary engines, but I figured I'd start here, as I know you guys, and really value your opinions. I am wanting to get a hit and miss engine... A "beginer" model if you will.... Something, that I'd be able to find parts for, and also have it be low in price... It seems that when I go to the flywheeler pages there are so many makes, and sizes, and often high prices, that I figure maybe you guys might know where I might start... I'm not sure I will really enjoy the hobby as much as I'm thinking I will now, but boy do I love the way they sound!!! I have a few more tractor shows to go to this season, so I'll still be taking more in, but I know I don't know enough about hit and misses to be near ready to make some logical choices and the things to look out for...
Really look forward to your input,
AP

Hi Adam,

I too love to hear the old hit & miss engines run. I plan on going the Inman, Ga. Farm Heritage Days tractor show next weekend (Sept. 19-21). They seem to have a lot of old hit and miss engines at the show. It’s great to hear that “put-tush-chug-chug-chug-chug-chug-put-tush-chug-chug-chug-chug-chug…:-).

I have seen them advertised for $1000 to $2000 in the state farmers market bulletin. Rick H. Ga

I would say get a 1 cylinder maytag if you want a real beginner model. I had never restored anything before and I got my maytag (for $150) running in 2 weeks, which included waiting for parts. The nice thing was that I don't have a garage and I was able to do the entire restoration in my kitchen! Sometimes being single has it's advantages, but you get the Idea. I also have an extra coil if anybody needs one.

If you want a bigger one, I'd say International, John deere ($$), herculese, economy, and fairbanks-morse would all be good ones. They're common as dirt, but don't expect a dirt price. Usually anything around 2 hp and up will run you around $500 and up depending on condition. The only hard parts to find on those larger engines are the magnetos. Enjoy whatever you get!

Adam -- can't help you with what to look for, but you will really enjoy it if you get one. I still have the old 5 horse one lunger that used to run the Delco before REA came thru (1948). I fire it up several times a year and all kinds of folks show up to hear her run... they're really unique old machines and a ball to run!!!

While I would love a nice hit and miss, I have started out with some of the small Maytag engines. The single cylinders are 2 cycle hit and miss but the 2 cylinders ones are not. Both are neat to piddle with and parts are fairly easy to find. Plus you can actually use them. I have seen them run pumps, fans, ice cream churns, etc. The only hard item to find is a good coil if you need one. But they are out there. Of course, I would like a nice JD or International Hit or Miss, but the wallet does not have the funds for one, yet.

I personally hope to find one of the old Internationals I can afford one of these days, and the monitor vertical looks pretty cool too.
Not even $.02 worth
enjoy the weekend
