There is a guy at work that is interested in a truck I have for sale. i am asking 1500 for the truck. He said that he didn't have any money but wanted to know if I would be interested in trading for an 8N. I told him that I would come by and look at it. I checked it out yesterday and wanted to get some advice from you people that know these tractors. Here is what I found. The tractor runs excellent. Motor sounds like a sewing machine. He said that his father bought it in the late sixties and he ended up with it 15 years ago. He had the motor rebuilt 10 years ago along with a new clutch and it might have a couple of hundred hours on it since then. All of the wheels look great. One pretty new rear tire, the other is still useable but not impressive. The front tires look to be original, but are useable. it has the Sherman 3 range gearbox (does this add any value)and the sheet metal is very decent. The original guages work. It has been in a shedded all of its life I think. The brakes do not work at all,(he says that some seals can be replaced easily to fix this?) the steering box is pretty loose at high speeds, it needs a new starter switch and the key switch is not original. Other than that, it seems to be pretty original. I think I can trade even. What would you do? I just want to be able to sell it to get the money for the truck.

Thanks

Where are you? I'll buy the tractor for $1500.00 from him and he will give you the money for the truck.

From Your description of the two I would trade now! The Sherman is of some value but only to a person whom is looking for a Sherman, sort of a vanity thing as I see it. The 8N should sell easily in the $2000 to $2700 range depending on where you are located.

Trade right now! You can easily sell the tractor for much more than the 1500.

The Sherman does add some value as it makes the tractor a little more versatile. They seem to be more highly valued when sold alone than in a tractor. But I would give the 1500 for the tractor as you say it is in a heartbeat. Easily worth that much and probably closer to 2500. Parts are readily available to fix anything on it. Unless the truck is a classic, the tractor will keep its value while the truck goes down in value.

The truck is a 1985 ford Ranger 4x4 with 200000 miles and some rust. The engine has 59000 and several new parts: starter, brakes, etc? it is a very dependable 4x4 but it is far from a classic.

Thanks
