A while back I posted a message regarding a whine coming out of the transmission area when running fast in 3rd gear, and a REAL WHINE if she's put into step-up. At low speeds and gears, a whine is not noticeable, and the tractor runs just fine.
My understanding is that the gears are straight- cut in this year tractor (1941). The question is, Could the straight-cut gears be causing the whine? I've been suspecting bearings.

I had that same problem....there are a few tapered roller bearings, with shims that adjust there endplay. When they get loose/worn, the whining stats. I only replaced one bearing, but I was really careful adjusting the endplay out....she's way quieter now.

It's a really messy job, but not that complicated.

Good Luck Steve

bearing whine, gears growl. Time for a tranny re-build before it gets too expensive.

And I turn off my hearing aids when I operate my 8N so what you don't hear won't hurt ya' (grin)..... .Dell
