What will cause water to bead on the outside of the intake manifold just above the carb?

Carb Heat on airplanes! So the carb does not freeze up on you when you least need it to happen.
If that's ever happened to you, you know the sick feeling of Total Silence, as the engine quits, and the houses start getting bigger. (Happened to me)

Rarely a concern on tractors, thankfully.

When a liquid is changed into a gas as when the gasoline is changed into gas it causes a decrease in temperature. The gasoline is changed into a gas when it passes through the low pressure area of the venture of the carburetor. This cold temperature on the intake above the venturi portion of the carburetor then condenses the moisture out of the air that comes in contact with the cold iron.

An Air conditioner works in the same way. When the compressed liquid refrigerant is passed through a venturi or orifice into a larger area under a lesser pressure it is converted into a gas and the action of this change from a liquid to a gas produces colder temperature. When the gas is again compressed into a liquid in the compresssor it is heated and this heat is dissapated through the metal area of the condensor which is in contact with the air to remove the heat from the liquid. Thus the hoter air inside the car is sent to the outside air.

Rusty..... ...the actual physical act of carburation makes the intake manifold get cold. If weather conditions are right, you can even get white frost on outside of carb too. Generally, because the manifold is a combo, hot exhaust, cold intake, you don't see exterior moisture unless you just start up and run for a moment and the hot exhaust gasses haven't had a chance to warm up the manifold..... ....Dell
