To add to what Jebb said. The 9n/2n had the steering arms and sector gears together, and a gear at the end of the steering shaft.. turning the whel obviously turned one gear forward and one aft. the early 8n improved on that a little with the ball-nut assemble.. but there was still limited adjustment. By rotating the side plates you could get some slack adjustment due to the eccentric housing, etc. ( FO-4 expalins this MUCH better than me ) The late 8n had a fairly decent scheme for sector gear backlash. There was a locking nut on a stud on either side of the gearbox, oposed from the steering sector. The stud has a slot for a flat head screwdriver... can be adjusted in or out ( may already be adjusted as much as it can.. who knows.. ) Best way to adjust is to jack up the front axle, and then adjust, and also check tie rod ends and steering arms for play, etc.. and lets you feel the movement in the spindles. Replace / repair parts as necescary... Might be a good time to lube the steering box as well. Late 8n had a cap screw or bolt on the right side. As dell would explain, look into the hood access panel, and look back down and under the oil pres gauge.. top right bolt/cap screw can be removed.. check it with a short wire.. but should be the one that isn't blind.. in other words you can add oil here... good 85/140 in the bottles with the small nipple work ok. I've used a short piece of vinal tubing to help also... F0-4 has good pictures of disassembly, etc. I rebuilt mine.. wasn't too bad for the actual work... just tedious removing hood, grill, dash, etc.. etc.. good luck Soundguy
