Have been unable to find main bearing cap studs and nuts for 8n. Parts books do not show. Is there a source for them anywhere?

The parts catalog lists original studs as being replaced by bolts, PN 8N6345-A and PN 8N6246-A. I don't know what range of serial numbers originally used studs, my 1952 engine had bolts as built by Ford. One of the original Ford lock washers had cracked in service and came out in two pieces.

The local Ace Hardware sells grade 8 bolts and lock washers. I used 5 1/2-13 x 2.5 inch bolts and one 1/2-13 x 3.5 inch bolt, plus 6 grade 8 lock washers, after verifying that the holes in the block were tapped in a way that they could accept the extra 1/8 length bolt length over Ford's custom made bolts.

Phile..... ....my N-Ford MPC lists B-6348, NUT, (bearing cap stud) 1/2-20, replaced by 8N-6345-A and 8N-6346-A. .....and..... p/n 8N-6345-A, BOLT (bearing cap) hex head, 1/2-13 x 2.34 (5 ea), and p/n 8N-6346-A, BOLT (bearing cap) 1/2-13 x 3.34 (1 ea) and p/n 34849-S, lockwasher 1/2" (6 ea); eff 39-52 (all). The longer bolt is for oilpump, and are pictured in engine assy (outside).

This implies that for what ever reason, if you replace the 3 main bearing studs, you're expected to use BOLTS instead of stud/nuts. Just as with the flathead cylinderhead studs, crankshaft studs are NLA from Ford.

I suspect that any good industrial supply house or engine parts house could supply studs if you knew the correct length, coarse thread for the castiron block end and fine thread for the nut end..... ...Dell
