Hello gents, quick qustion. Is 40W thicker than 30W and if so, on my 8N, is it ok to use 30W in the winter and 40W in the summer and to switch back and forth. Is this ok and is it safe for her? She does smoke a little but has great oil pressure. Thanks in advance....Randy

Hi, Randy. Yes, 40 is heavier than 30. The weight you use kind of depends on where you're at -- the warmer the weather, the heavier weight you can safely use. Here where I am in Minnesota, you could walk on 30W in the winter. Although 30W is the recommended summer oil for N's, 40W would probably be OK if you have hot summer temperatures -- i.e., in the 80s or warmer.

Randy...yep, 40 wt is thicker than 30 (the higher the number - the thicker the oil). As far as switching with the seasons, depends on where you live. Colder climate - you may want to use 30 wt in the winter, and 40 in summer. Warm climate - 30 wt year-round should do. Personally, I live in southern Va., and use 30 wt year round.

A little smoke and great pressure sounds like you may have some ring wear, but nothing to worry about.

Meant to say "Warm climate - 40 wt year-round..." (Senior moment)

Also, even though I'm not in a cold climate, 30 wt works well for me as a year-round oil.
