What does this sound like: Clutch appears to depress OK. Put into gear and let clutch up and tractor moves forward an inch. ( Any gear ) With gearbox in neutral loud noise emitting from engine/gearbox. Depress clutch and noise goes. Any ideas greatly appreciated. If I need to split engine/gearbox is this a big job and how long to do? All ideas gratefully received as always

There is a splined coupler between the trans and diff area at the second split that can break. Does the PTO and 3-point still work when the tractor stops moving or do they stop also. What I'm saying is you need to figure where the problem is in order to know where to split the tractor.

What does this sound like?-- Sounds like you have torn the center out of your clutch disc. Also could be a main drive gear, axle shaft, or some other drive line part but clutch is most likely.

Before you start splitting--yes you need to go in there--find an F O 4 manual and at the least a floor jack and some solid cribbing. DO NOT use concrete blocks. I did one with an engine hoist and a floor jack in about half a day but figure on a couple of days especially if you are not sure of the trouble you are going after.

Your mileage may vary
