I need to replace the upper lift shaft bushing on my 49 8N. The right side is fairly tight but the left side has a lot of ware(the side having the most pressure when plowing with bottom plow or tiller). I was wondering how difficult it is to disassemble the lift cover and remove the shaft for re-bushing. I have an FO-4 manual but would like the advice from the more experienced N owners. Thanks, Rick(Ga)

For me the most dificult part of the repair was removing the lift arms due to 50 years of rusting. The manual said to "bump" the arm. While on the tractor I heated the lift arms around the lift shaft and then used a heavy hammer to impact the arm off of the shaft. It takes a while but it works. The lift shaft can be used to press the bushings out but DO NOT use a mammer on the ends of the lift shaft. Use appropriate sized pipe to install the bushing.

Good luck.
