We bought this cottage on beautiful lake in 1973. It burnt down last evening. The boys all grew up there. The whole family is upset. I guess we will have to rebuild right away. BURT.

Sorry to hear of your loss Burt. Several years ago, a neighbor who lived in a single-wide mobile home called me early one morning sounding hysterical and said "please come help me, my house is on fire". By the time I got dressed and got there it was too late; they lost everything. Fortunately, no one was injured. Rick H. Ga.

Man this sure brings back memories for me. I grew up in a cabin on the Iowa River that my Dad built in the 40's. My favorite place to be during the summers. I moved away from Iowa in the 70's and the cabin went to my brother-in-law and sister when Dad died in 1983. There kids turned it into a poker playing and partying place and burned it to the ground a few years ago. The cabin contained many old artifacts of my childhood. I'm still carrying a bit of a resentment about that. Sorry to hear of your loss and hope you can rebuild.

Losing a place like that is really tough...sorry to hear it...Rebuild it! You won't be sorry. Make it bigger and better so you and your family will enjoy this one even more for the next 30 years. Correct all the things you didn't like about the old one...Round up pictures of old cabin in the past and make an album to keep in a prominent place in the new one, so All can reminisce when they are there. Better get going...WINTER IS COMING!

Wow. That's gotta hurt. I have one cottage (we call 'em cabins in Texas) and am building a second. But the second will never hold the memories of the first...

Other than a death in the family fire is one of the things that can be allmost as upseting. I know because 9 of my neibors lost their homes and I had 30 of my 40 acs burn in that same fire. It takes a long time to get over it and some never do. Mark H.

Bert..... ...any unintential fire is disturbing, the loss of property, second-guessing what went wrong, but its the loss of childhood memories that will hurt the most. Sorry for your loss..... ...Dell

While one can physically replace the cottage, you can't replace the dents and dings left by kids that have meaning. I walk out back of the house and see dents in the steel siding where my then 6 year old bounced a baseball against the house. he's 27 now or a line on a door facing where he measured his height.

My synpathies go out to you and your family and best of luck in the rebuild.
