On these real cold days this year in Ohio, I have found the N needs a little spray of starting fluid to get going. I have heard some bad things concerning using starting fluid, relative to engine damage. Is there a correct way to use it cautiously to avoid damage ? I only give it one or two small sprays and she fires right up. The tractor will eventually start, but the starting fluid saves a lot of cranking. The N runs fine once she gets going.

Veris..... ..I flunked mind reading, just ask my ex-wife (grin).

You'll really need to be a little more descriptive. Unlike the ol' Western Union telegraph, this great N-Board doesn't charge by the word count. Our advice and opinions are worth what you pay for 'em.

There are many possiblities as to the reason your 9N doesn't want to start in cold weather.

Spark at the right time comes to mind. Poor compression is another. Fouled sparkplugs are another. Sometimes even clean looking sparkplugs are "fouled", replace 'em anyways.

Suggest you get an I&T FO-4 repair manual, $25 cheep, get one..... ...Dell

Below 28 degrees, my '48 just woun't start without it! My '51 never needs it down to 10 or 12 degrees. I could never figure it out! It only takes a little, but when you need it, YOU NEED IT!

The problem with starting fluid is that people tend to use too much of it. A couple small shots should be all you need. If it won't start then, look for other problems. I've heard that too much fluid can cause an engine to lock up, but I never have experienced it firsthand.

We put most of can in the gas tank when we fill it up in the winter to make the gas more volatile.

My 8N used to take a while to crank in cold weather too. However, when I put new spark plugs in her, she starts up right away.

I think it's a bigger problem on diesel engines, you should be fine with light use on a gasser.

about 14 YRS ago my father in law (not to mechancally inclined) could'nt get his '72 Chevelle started, so he put in some starting fluid, just a little at first. nothing. He ended up putting about 3/4 of a can in and guess what? He cranked it and got a spark Bent valves lifters and shot a beautiful flame about twenty feet high Starting fluid is great stuff but use it sparingly.
