Does anyone with an older 9N have a source for the red dash light that the early 9N had? My 1940 dash is now repaired so I can put the light in. The previous owner had broken the dash where the ignition switch goes and had opened up the lamp hole for the switch. I just got the dash all welded and repaired so I can now put the light back in. I just have no idea where to find the lamp. I have seen a couple with this light so there must be someplace I can find it. I think the hole is 3/8". In the photo you can see the 2 holes in the dash. One is for the light switch and the other is for the red lamp. It sure is nice having the ignition switch back where it belongs.

Hey, thanx alot, guys! I had thought about a couple of places to look aside from digging on the web. I was hoping that someone else had gone thru the search for one and could save me some dead ends. This tractor is pretty much original. It has an 8N head on it and I think the rear has been gone thru since it has the riveted axles. The engine had been rebuilt a bit before I got it and obviously had not been worked very much. The paint ID marks were still on the piston tops. And the grill is not original along with the steering wheel. But, the rest of it is original. I have to pinch myself to make sure I am not dreaming that I own such a gem. It lived most of it's life on a farm kept in a shed ( rust not a problem ). OK, I have rambled about my Nellie enough for now. Love that N! Thanx again!

The welding I got done locally for $45. It pays to have a cousin who is a machinist. He made the new shims for me and steered me to the welding shop (a good one). It also helps that he loves old iron too. He would have an N but he is kept busy on his Model A's. He has one that is restored to showroom quality. And he has 2 more waiting to be restored. One is a pickup. He loves old iron and drools over my N ( just like me ). I'll post a pic of the Model A sometime. :-)

Its not sold as a oil light, I use it as a oil light. They come in green and amber also.

Gary, That aluminum dash/steering pedestal looks perfect. I think I remember writing to you about replacement before you decided to repair it. Looks like money WELL spent! There are several sources for the lamp. MAY not be exact tho.

That dash looks similar to this fellows dash. You may try the fine sponsors of this board for the part. Never hurts to try. I know a couple other sources but try these guys first.

respectfully...Bob

In a semi-related topic, Does anybody have an old throttle lever? The one that slides over the quadrant. I couldn't get the little arm off the bottom and ground the rod in half (instead of grinding the little arm off, which is readily available).

What was wrong with the arm in the first place. Many throttle arms wear a groove in the underside from sliding up and down all on the quadrant all it's life. I was able to fill up the groove on mine by mig welding some stainless steel rod in there. That brought the arm up after filling the gap and added more tension in the throttle lever.

You may check ebay, boneyards, or other known part suppliers.

FWIW,
Bob

There's the rod (the one that your hand grabs) and then there's the 2" long arm that is held on with a pin at the bottom that actuates the gov. control rods. The little short stubby arm was badly rusted and worn. I tried to drive the pin out, but it was stuck solid. I ended up just cutting through the throttle rod (that you grab with your hand at the quadrant) in order to get the whole thing out so I could clean the steering column.

Plus, I had to take those parts off to remove the dash plate as the throttle rod keeps one of the dash panel bolts from coming out. I'm lucky that 4 of the dash bolts are original, as are all of the bolts on the battery tray. So now I need a new throttle rod and stubby linkage arm (behind dash). The stubby arm is available, but the control rod is not. Yes, it was worn slightly from sliding back and forth over the quadrant, but not severely. Too late now, though.

I have a '40 just like it. Did exactly the same repair. Just as we have ALL read here dozens of times, if you intend to have and hold a working 'N', get to KNOW your local boneyard! I find something "new"? every time I go. (and learn to weld too!)
