I need help guys. My 12volt convert 9n won't start. Turns but no spark at plug. Was able to get weak spark by shorting the coil resistor. Only have one resistor in system. How can I tell if coil is 6 or 12 volt. Rick

I will probably catch a ration for responding to this one 'cause I'm certainly no expert at electrics BUT, a recent frustrating afternoon made me learn a simple and valuable lesson. I just helped a mechanic put the new engine in my red belly. No spark. Eh?!? After much head scratching and swapping electricals from the parts rig(he had forgotten to bring his test light) we finally discovered that the all important (paper?) gasket that insulates the hot lead from grounding to the distributor was shot. We improvised one and it fired right up. Lesson: have at least two test lights somewhere. This makes me wonder just how many electrical problems could have been avoided by being able to quickly pin point the source of a simple short or loose ground?

I think I get your drift. I wish there were a sure way to check the coil. I will re-look at things and let you know. P.S. I don,t have a cann donor to throw parts at it. How about those 9ers! Rick

I had a similar problem today. I was mowing with my 8N that's been converted to a 12-volt alternator. Ran it out of gas. Put a couple of gallons in it and started it back up. It promply quit and wouldn't restart unless I left it for awhile. Then the same thing would happen. No start or start for a second and then die. Check for spark. Guess what? No spark. This is on a fresh overhauled, side-mount distributor engine with a brand-new distributor. Started checking everything - volts to coil, volts to distributor, points, condensor, everything. Found NOTHING wrong, but still no start.

To make a long story short, I went back to basics. Ran outa gas, so check gas, carb, etc. It turns out that if I squirted gas into the carb, the engine would start right up! But it won't idle or run slow. So I guess a jet or the idle circuit must be plugged. Tomorrow, i'm tearing back into it. (Got too dark to work on it tonight.)

The wierd thing is that I hooked up a timing light to the coil wire and cranked the engine. No spark, no light. But if I squirted gas into the carb to get it started, the timing light flashes and I have spark!! I am totally mystified. I even changed the coil. It made no difference at all.

I've never had this problem before and I know it doesn't make any sense. After I clean the carb tomorrow, i'll post and let you know if the problem was gas or spark.

FINDING VOLTAGE AT THE COIL MEANS NOTHING IT ONLY TELLS YOU THAT YOU HAVE 12 VOLTS THERE. IF THE DROPPING RESISTOR IS BAD-RUSTY OR POOR CONNECTIONS YOU WILL SEE VOLTAGE PASS THROUGH BUT WILL NOT GET ENOUGH AMPERAGE TO FLOW TO THE COIL FOR A SPARK ETC. DOUBLE CHECH THAT DROPPING RESITOR OR SHORT IT OUT FOR JUST A FEW SECONDS AND SEE IF YOU GET A SPARK THAT WAY

I have done the 3 fuel screen check and cleaned every thing. Cleaned up carb and plugs. I can smell fuel fumes out the exhaust pipe. The only way I can get a spark of any kind was to short the coil resistor.

When you say "short the resistor" do you mean you attach a jumper wire across the resistor from one terminal to the other? If you get a spark by doing this, your resistor could be bad.

Still working on mine. Have to wait until tomorrow for the parts shop to open before I can finish.

I found it. Took resistor out of circuit and took resistor apart and found an open on back side that I could not see. Has a part # of (D. Pat. No. 254186) thats all. Anybody know where I can get a replacement? Rick

I'm sure you can get one from your local New Holland dealer. Or your local auto parts dealer. Just tell them if it's a 6-volt or 12-volt system.

Congratulations on finding the problem!!
