Now that you guy's have helped me with the overheating problem I am now back bush hogging. The question now is, how much fuel should a 8n use bush hogging( not to heavy stuff). also, I have installed a see thru gas filter ( of normal size) right before the carburetor, and should'nt that stay at least half full while running down the road in 4th gear with no load? mine goes empty and I think I am going to run out of gas, seems to me that I'm using to much gas. I have completely rebuilt all the electricial and the carburetor. Any help would be appreciated..Roby

I have ran as much as 20 gal. per day through an 8N when working it hard. Whether raking hay or pulling a harrow. I have ran out and had to open the reserve to get back after about 6 hours of hard plowing.

There's only one fuel tank on the tractor. If you open the fuel shut-off valve a turn or two, gas will flow. However, the stem that pokes up into the tank has two openings. Eventually, the gas gets lower than the stem and your engine dies. THEN you open the valve all the way and it opens the second (lower) hole and you have one gallon left to get you back to the shed to fill up. That's what they're referring to by the one gallon reserve. Pretty nifty, huh?

Well I'll be a "Son of a gun". I never new that. You said the reserve hole, do you mean where the stem fits down into the valve assembly? I did notice a opening there. Their was some rust deposits down in there and I cleaned them out. I had all that out just recently and never noticed the two holes. My valve became plugged up and I had to take it out and clean everything. Now I wish I had known so I could have made sure the reserve hole was open just in case I needed the extra fuel. Thanks

All too common. Most people don't know about the reserve and often it is clogged just as you say. I have an aftermarket sediment bowl and it does not have a reserve. It doesn't even have a screen there. Go ahead and yank it out next time you put it up for the winter and clean everthing up with a wire brush. Easy to do and you'll thank yourself next time you run out of gas.

Roby..... ....N's generally use about 1 gal of gas per hour when working....plowing, discing, brushhoggin'.

Worry about your extra inline fuel filter when it starts to fill up with gas 'cuz the filter's gettin clogged. Some get excited when they don't see gas but trust me, its just flowing on thru. Thats good because gravity fed fuel can't stand restrictions.

Some people don't think extra filter in the fuel line is worth it and causes problems, claiming empty filter as proof. I say properly installed, not a problem. I have one and haven't changed it in 12 yrs.

Howsomevers, if'n you just gotta see fuel in yer filter, figger out someways to make some sorta "S" bend so the filter is facing "up-hill" and you will always have fuel showing as gravity is pushing up-hill over the top of the down-hill leg of the "S" to the carb..... ....Dell

The low compression flathead engine is not particularly thermodynamically efficient, but should not be terrible either. I would guess a brake specific fuel consumption no worse than 0.6 pounds per horsepower-hour.

So if you are doing serious bush hogging of tall grass you might average 20 horsepower at the flywheel. Using the 0.6 BSFC estimate, this would be 12 pounds per hour or about 2 gallons per hour.

For a 10 gallon tank, this is 4 to 5 hours of running with the throttle pushed up nearly all the way and the engine being seriously loaded down by the workload.

I would say average late-season dry grass bush hogging might average out at only half the fuel calculated above, implying it ought to run for a full day on 10 gallons.

Years ago, when I first got my 8N, I bragged to a co-worker that my 8N would run all day long on a gallon of gas. Of course, I was slightly exaggerating. The 8N, although pretty good on gas is not as good when under a heavy load. I can usually get about 4 to 6 hours of heavy hogging on a tank of gas.

On the other hand, my 1983 Ford 2310 diesel will run all day long on a gallon of diesel fuel.:-) Rick H. Ga.

Little confused with your post. Fuel consumption is probably gauged by hours. That is how many hours with a full tank?
