Rick..... ...40 yrs experience in aerospace electronics. Involuntarily retired in 1999 after 20 yrs as a Flight Test Instrumentation Engineer for the Boeing Commercial Airplane Co where my speciality was the study of the effects of vibration on airplanes with accelerometers. People seem to get excited when wings and things fall off airplanes..... ....Dell

Dell,

I had the feeling you worked for Boeing. Me too. 34 + years as a Propulsion Engineer for BCAG before the merger ended it. Went to college with Jon Whitworth. Maybe you knew him.

Regards, Jerry

Dell,
I was Propulsion Nacelle Aero lead for RR powered 757's. I was on the program from PD(1977) to post-cert(1985). Jon retired circa. 1995-96 and I lost track of him. Regards,
Jerry Laskody

Jerry..... ....I flew both RR's & PW's 757 cert flights. We might have crossed paths. PW-2037 had a major "cabin noise" issue, seems the most fuel efficent RPM's turned the 757 cabin into a big pipe organ hummer at a very low frequency and made some people nausious, depending upon where they sat in the cabin. The noisiest aircraft in the fleet. While the 3-spool RR RB211-535 was the quietest 757. Enjoyed working with the Rollers, once my ears got tuned to "limey speak".

One series of RR tests, I sheepdog trialed my blue merle Australian Shepherd and got a 1st place ribbon. Brought in the ribbon and picture of dog and taped to my flight test instrumentation console for a little braggin'. Made a big hit with the RR guys, seems that sheepdog trials are big on the telly in England..... ...Dell

Dell,
Yeah you're right about the Pratt. Really high tech hot section (single crystal blades, efficient blade cooling, etc) allowed high turbine in temps which makes for low TSFC's. Lots of stability problems on compressor plus the cabin vibration problem kept our guys on that program very busy. RR had to bring out the -E4 version of the -535 to compete with Pratt so we did a couple of cert programs on that engine series.
The English guys were great to work with, too. I spent some time in England and really enjoyed it. The folks were friendly and the beer was great.
So you're a sheep dog trialer(sp?)? I have a Aussie Cattle Dog (Blue Healer) that I'm hoping to use on the ranch once I get it stocked. Had some training on him and found out that I was his biggest problem! But they can sure be helpful when you're working cows.

Regards,
Jerry

Jerry..... ...I think we're all our dog's biggest problem (grin). Haffa lotta respect for the ACD Queensland Blue (and Red) Heelers. Known and watched 'em trial against Aussies and Kelpies and Border Collies, they do good with cattle..... ...Dell

Dell, Baxter Black, the famous cowboy poet compared the Aussie and the Border Collie to the quarterback of a football team. He said they were real thinkers. He compared the the Heeler to a middle linebacker. Brute force! I'll be darned if he isn't right. Workin' cows is a bit different than workin' sheep. Cows can kill a dog. I've put mine in some positions that should have made ol' Jack look at his hole card. But he figured his way out of them without any help from me.
Regards,
Jerry

P.S. we shouldn't be takin' space in this forum for reminicing about our Boeing days. You can reach me at brknhkrnch@stignatius.net. I'd look forward to hearing from you.

Glad you were one of the ones helping to reduce problems like this. I hope we continue to get better and better with airline safety. You probably taught them fellers 'lot when you were a Boeing dude.

respecting you more and more each day....Bob

I know what you mean, Dell. I was an aircraft maintenance inspector for one of the majors up until my kidney disease took me out of work. I miss being around the planes! Worked there for 22 years.
